Struggling North American sales drove Tempurpedic to introduce lower-priced mattresses earlier this year, called Tempurpedic Simplicity. Over the last few months, we closely examined the material, raising some concerns and issues.
The Tempur-Pedic Simplicity line is designed to compete with online retailers’ more competitive prices. To see how they stack up, Mattress Inquirer decided to compare Simplicity to Amerisleep, a leading online-only mattress manufacturer in Arizona.
Tempurpedic Simplicity vs Amerisleep
While comparing the two brands, we considered three criteria: quality, coolness, and health.
When it comes to memory foam mattresses, quality is understood in terms of the foam’s density and bed’s warranty. The minimum density for effective support and lasting comfort is often stated as 4.5lb. The Tempurpedic Simplicity mattresses use TEMPUR-Essential foam with a density of 2.5lb (half of standard Tempur foam). Amerisleep uses densities that range from 4.5-8lb in their mattresses. Tempurpedic guarantees Simplicity mattresses for 10 years, while Amerisleep provides a 20 year warranty.
Because it is a pared-down economy offering, the Tempurpedic Simplicity doesn’t have the traditional airflow layer or the newer Breeze technology. This means it likely sleeps even hotter than the standard Tempurpedic beds. Amerisleep memory foam features extreme open-cell technology plus the cooling comfort of bamboo covers. Studies have shown Amerisleep mattresses sleep 8x cooler than traditional memory foam.
The healthiness of a mattress is crucial because you will spend nearly ⅓ of each day in bed. Both Simplicity and Amerisleep beds are hypoallergenic and dust mite-resistant. While Tempurpedic doesn’t disclose much about the composition of their materials, Amerisleep products have no VOCs and naturally antimicrobial bamboo covers. Amerisleep’s beds ship compressed via courier, meaning the take up less packaging materials and require less energy to transport.
So, which is the better value, Tempurpedic Simplicity or Amerisleep?
For many people, price and relative value is of the utmost importance. The Simplicity in Queen size costs $1099. The Amerisleep Americana in Queen size costs $849. Considering that the Tempurpedic Simplicity line with Tempur-Essential foam is low density, has no features to combat heat buildup, and likely contains unhealthy chemicals, it is hard to see why it would warrant a higher a price point than online retailers like Amerisleep with quality products.
